Background
Dr. Rangaraj earned her medical degree at Stanley Medical College in Chennai, India in 2004. She completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan, then an interventional pain medicine fellowship in Georgia. She has practiced pain medicine since 2011 and is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
A background in rehabilitation medicine shapes how she practices. The question is not only what hurts, but what the pain is stopping you from doing — and what has to change for you to do it again.
Philosophy of care
Her stated objective is to increase function, maximize quality of life, and minimize the need for chronic opioid use. In practice that means finding the pain generator before treating it, using image-guided procedures where they are indicated, and building a plan that includes movement, sleep and medication review.
Many patients arrive on long-term narcotics they would rather not be taking. Tapering is done gradually and with support, alongside treatment aimed at the underlying source of the pain.
